The 1997 Ford F150 has been one of the most popular pickup trucks ever produced. They come in a great selection of trim packages and body styles. Engines range from moderately powerful, to very powerful and get rather decent fuel economy as well. There certainly is a reason why these pickups have been the best selling ones in America for 28 years now. As a used vehicle, these make great finds and even with age remain fairly inexpensive in the repair and maintenance category. Buyers looking for their next full size pickup seriously must consider one of these trucks.
The F150 has come a long way since the first models that were produced as basic work trucks with practically no creature comforts at all. Now, depending upon what model purchased owners can get a great luxury style interior with more amenities than this author can mention. Trim packages start with the basic XL which is the standard workhorse of the group offering very few extra amenities. Owners will get very few power accessories and only a simple AM/FM stereo in the simple XL models. The next step up is the XLT which represents a middle of the road package for a full size pickup. Most XLT models come with full power accessories (windows and locks), possible keyless entry, AC, upgraded stereo systems, and different interior styles.
Going further up the line in comfort is the Lariat edition pickups. These come in a great variety of exterior body colors, interior fabrics and accents. Again full power accessories are standard along with, AC, CD/Cassette players, optional leather upholstery, and expanded center consoles. The Fx4 off road package can be configured in a multitude of different ways having all the options of the high end lariat edition. Other Fx4 features include a raised body and sturdier suspension system. Sports models have been engineered for better highway and street performance. The Kind Ranch models offer the largest interior cabins and a Texas themed interior that is very distinct.
The engines offered for the 1997 Ford F150 start with a 4.2 liter V6, then a 4.6 liter V8, and a 5.4 liter V8. Consumers looking at basic models are more likely going to find the smaller V6 engine and a 2 wheel drive configuration. As a basic work truck that doesn’t need to haul extreme loads and won’t be in poor weather the basic packages work very well. Those who need a little more out of their truck should look at an upper level trim package with a V8 engine and 4 wheel drive. All Lariat, Fx4, and Sport models come with the larger 5.4 liter V8 as standard equipment.
Ford states that these models get the best gas mileage in comparison with the Chevy Silverado and Dodge Ram. Most do except for a few comparable models with the Silverado. The average fuel economy ranges from 15 mpg city to 22 mpg highway. The larger V8 engines get the lowest fuel consumption numbers while the V6 does extremely well for a full size pickup.
Consumers looking for a reliable truck that has potential to last a lot longer should consider a 1997 Ford F150 in good condition. They offer great inside amenities along with comfort that will make for an outstanding ride quality in most situations.
